Sita Tamang ā€” Painting the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition

In a sunlit studio in Kathmandu, Sita Tamang sits cross-legged before her work, a fine brush in hand. She paints in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, where every line and colour carries meaning and nothing is decorative by accident.

Her Craft, Her Signature

Her latest piece, a hand-painted wooden cabinet, shows the range of her craft. A full-blooming lotus opens around a golden dharma wheel, framed by curling green foliage. The endless knot, a symbol of infinite compassion and the interdependence of all things, appears on the side panel. Rainbow-edged clouds and scrollwork in gold line trace the borders, all set against a warm saffron-orange ground.

Behind her, shelves of jars hold the powdered pigments she works with: blues, reds, greens and yellows, each prepared and applied by hand. Each piece takes patience, a steady hand and years of practice, and none of it can be rushed.
