Selkar Tamang — Maker of the Sacred Damaru
Step into Selkar's shop and the first thing you notice is the colour: shelves of gold and crimson brocade, stacked and tied with red cord, rising almost to the ceiling. Then you notice him, bent over his work, adjusting a fold, checking a seam with the same care he gives every piece.
His Craft, His Signature
Selkar makes the damaru, the small two-sided hand drum of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Its hourglass shape and its quick, rattling beat have accompanied chanting and ritual for centuries. A damaru is an instrument, but it is also a sacred object. It has to sound right, it has to be made right, and it should be treated with respect for as long as it's owned.
Each drum comes with a brocade case in golden silk, woven with lotus and cloud patterns and finished with red piping. Each case is stitched to fit its drum, and a knotted red tie holds it closed.
