This Barahi Paper Mache Mask is a traditionally handcrafted piece from Nepal, capturing the distinctive features of Barahi-one of the revered deities in the Nawa Durga pantheon. Made using age-old paper-mache techniques, the mask is meticulously shaped, painted, and finished by skilled artisans. Barahi is easily recognized by the green jewel placed at the top of her nose, a signature feature that adds depth and character to her form.

Cultural & Spiritual Significance:
The Nawa Durga Dance of Bhaktapur is a powerful tantric tradition that dates back to the Malla period (10th-18th century). It represents the Nine Durgas (Shakti)-fierce divine protectors who safeguard communities from misfortune, obstacles, and unseen forces. Performed by the hereditary Banmala families, these dancers take on the identity of the deities through elaborate masks, sacred rituals, and ritualistic music during long festivals such as the Navadurga Jatra.

This ancient dance embodies the continuous cycle of life, death, protection, and renewal, expressing divine power that surpasses human limitations.

Within this sacred pantheon, Barahi stands out with her distinct appearance and symbolism. Though she is not among the leading figures in the primary sequence of dances, her solo performance emphasizes her individual spiritual presence-representing strength, stability, and protective feminine energy. Her mask carries an aura of calm authority, making it a meaningful addition to any cultural or spiritual collection.
