This is a hand painted statue of Manjushree which has been made with perfection and has the most intricate and detailed carvings. The carvings and painting on the robe through out the lower part is extremely beautiful. The painting of floral motifs add more glory to this beautiful and powerful statue. The face of Manjushree is gold plated. The hand painting is done by our Artist Meenu Shakya. She has introduced an embossed painting where the flower and border of the robe is embossed using painting.

Here Manjushri is depicted as a male Bodhisattva wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realization of transcendent wisdom which cuts down ignorance and duality. The scripture supported by the Padma (lotus) held in his left hand is a Prajnaparamita sutra, representing his attainment of ultimate realization from the blossoming of wisdom. Manjushri is here seated on a single padma(Lotus) as his asana(seat).

According to Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. It is believed that Manjushri saw a lotus flower in the center of the lake and cut a gorge at Chovar to allow the lake to drain. The place where the lotus flower settled became Swayambhunath Stupa and the valley thus became habitable.
