This is a beautifully handcarved wooden mask of Black Mahakala. The carvers from Sindupalchowk, a village about 60 miles from Kathmandu, carved this amazing mask entirely using the ancient old technique of carving which they learnt from their older generation.

Black Mahakala is the protector. It is said that Black Mahakala is the manifesation of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. From the Heart of Arya Avalokitesvhara emerged a dark blue Hung letter, which transformed into the Instantaneous Protector of wisdom. Buddha Amitabha proclaimed thus. ''Som of the family, you shall have the strength of the wrathful Yama, Lord of death. You shall embody the great wrathful empowerments of body, speech, mind, qualities and activities of all the Buddhas throughout the three times''. Ever Since Black Mahakala has remained as the doctrine Protector of all the Buddha fields.

Wonderful carving :-D

A very skillful carving. The only improvement would be small holes or other means to attach a method of hanging it on the wall. I will drill two small holes at the top, and insert a loop of cord for hanging. It is a very good piece of folk art. Thank you, Jim :-D
